General context :



Location


The base is physically located in the Arctic, 78°70 Lat. North, 11° 70 Long. East, in Svalbard, in the Ny-Ålesund village devoted to science. Ny-Ålesund is one of the world´s northernmost human settlement. The village is close to kongsfjorden, north West Spitsbergen.


Environment

Informations on climate can be obtained on AWI, Ny-Ålesund is surrounded by a large fjord (Kongsfjorden), glaciers, morains, glaciers rivers, mountains, and a typical toundra ecosystem.

Regulations in Svalbard


The base activities on the field are submitted to Svalbard´s specific rules. Specific rules are operated by Kingsbay Company, notably to minimize human effect on environment and to assume waste management in the village.


Scientific context in Ny-Ålesund


This village is devoted to arctic scientific activities, 11 Stations are ran by national institutions from international countries. The base manager contributes to the scientific life core of Ny-Ålesund with a permenant staff and all year round measurements. The leaders of the base are involved into the scientific coordination group , to be in cohesion with the global strategy developed and not to interfere with others activities. Logistic context in Ny-Ålesund


In Ny-Ålesund, the private company Kingsbay A/S provides all services as a support for heavy logistics needed for the scientific activities and also for a global provider as food and power supply in the village. Scientific stations also provides services to support scientific collaborations.
