AWIPEV support access is possible for any scientist

Access :

AWIPEV Base is open in priority to French and German scientists developing or having projects in Ny-Ålesund. AWIPEV Base has a lot of support to set up the project, but doesn't provide any funding for specific logistics or scientific equipment,  staff or equipment transportation. Therefore, the project leader must find grants to cover his project annual cost without help from AWIPEV Base. AWIPEV Base managers provide informations about notable feasibility and available equipment that helps the project leader to build the project (in order to minimize the global costs).

Please, follow the given procedure in order to get access to the base:

  1. Send your scientific proposal to IPEV or AWI
    • French scientific proposals have to be submitted to the IPEV Scientific Committee (CPST). Proposals have to be filled in online on IPEV website. Deadline is in September 2007. IPEV generally covers the costs of approved projects that have been positively evaluated by its Scientific Council (contact). Projects must be yearly submitted to the scientific council, even if they have a multi annual status. Grants are definitively known at the beginning of January 2007.
    • German proposals have to send their proposal to the Koldewey secretariat, following the guidelines given here. Deadline is at the end of September 2007. AWI provides logistical support to German projects and joint programmes. Financial support has to be found elsewhere.
    • Scientists from other countries can also apply for an access to AWIPEV Base. The programme must be validated by an official national committee, and granted for its achievement. However, priority is given to those that are in collaboration with French or German research laboratories. A second priority is given to those that are strongly linked with another station in Ny-Ålesund. An official cooperation for logistics operations must be validated in this case.

    • The AWIPEV Advisory board will proceed to a joint evaluation of the validated projects, in late December. AWIPEV equipment available in 2007 can also be used in 2008, check the 'Scientific' and 'Logistics' equipment list before writing down your equipment budget requests, and ask AWIPEV Base for your wishes.

  2. If you plan any intervention on the environment (digging holes, working with animals), permanent installations or field activity outside the Kongsfjorden, you have to send your scientific proposal to the Norwegian Governor of Svalbard. More information is given here.
  3. You have to register your project details in two databases.
